A Blonde Firecracker in the West Village!

Posted on 4/8/2015

Two years ago, at the Montreal Jazz Festival, I was enthralled by a powerful singer on the main stage. Her voice filled Ste. Catherine Street with a wonderful resonance. Singing her renditions of Nina Simone, Prince, and others, she wowed the crowd. The name of this young woman was Morgan James.

On Wednesday, April 1st, at the Highline Ballroom on West 16th Street, I had a second chance to experience Ms. James and her great backup band. In the small, cozy Ballroom, she started with her song, "Call My Name". Oh yes! With her soul in every song, she went through her new album that included "Hunter" and her version of "Take Me To Church". When she hits those high notes, my spine tingled.

She's very short, maybe 5' 5". And very slender. How does such a powerful, soulful, honest voice emerge from that petite body? The answer: personal confidence and determination. Ms. James is also an actress who has performed on Broadway. For being a true model of feminine power, I salute Morgan James.
